Children and respect for differences

Respecting oneself and others is one of the values that I consider most important in the education of children. When I see white, black, Chinese, South American children, sharing slides, swings and seesaws in a playground, I see a hall of hopes towards equality.

We reflect on children and I respect differences, a value, that of tolerance, which must be basic in the education of our children.

If you stop to observe the children, you realizeand they, by themselves, do not see the differences. When they play, they do not waste time looking at or analyzing the skin color, the type of language, or the social class of the other children. They play. The differences are in the attitudes of their parents. In how they react to diversity. Respect for differences, diversity, different cultures and races, must and it can be taught to children from a very young age.

Diversity exists, and we must accept and respect it, instead of criticizing her. We can learn a lot from differences. It is a very important task especially in a world where realities are mixed. A child can learn to respect diversity when his parents do too, by reading books and stories about other cultures, learning other languages, traveling and getting to know different places and realities, visiting exhibitions about different countries, and having freedom in the choice of his friends.

Parents and educators have, in front of themselves, a great task of educating children in respect for diversity. Furthermore, they can teach how to transform ethnic and cultural differences into learning. Children can learn a lot from the different cultures and traditions of their friends and peers. It is important that we instill in children how important it is to integrate and embrace a new friend or colleague, be it Chinese, white, black, Arab or indigenous. A child with a culture or language different from ours must be given the opportunity to adapt and integrate.
